‘Lord, show us the light of Your face!’  (Psalm 4:6-NAB)

Jesus as prophet–the truth-teller, inspired by the Holy Spirit—is another facet of Jesus’ life that Vatican ll encouraged the laity to emulate.
With humility, we take seriously the call to tell the truth and to embody its message. We do so with words and actions—seeking to reflect the truth of Jesus with and within us. Deceit of any kind makes us uncomfortable, as does harsh and cruel moralizing. Why? The Spirit of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy. The more nearly we walk with Him, the more wholly we reflect the fullness of His truth.

That means we can make good assessments of whether truth is honored or not. Ever teachable, we also grow in the confidence that the truth we know can set us free and also be a gift to others. How vital for His Church are those who prophesy by ‘strengthening, encouraging, and comforting fellow believers’ (1Cor. 14:3), and so build up the Church in the Spirit of Christ the prophet.

‘But when He, the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all truth…He will bring glory to Me by taking what is Mine and making it known to you.’ (John 16: 12, 14)

‘Father, help us to trust the truth You have wrought in our depths. Deepen and integrate that truth in us so we embody the truth more wholly. Give us courage to edify Your Church with the truth You have made known to us. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we confess our sins of cowardice and compromise. We have violated Your holy commands in regards to what we have done to our bodies and other bodies. And in our compromise we have become cowards, unwilling to stand for what we know to be true for the dignity of all. We ask that You might have mercy on Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington; uphold marriage in these states, and in our nation, as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on ‘gay marriage.’
