‘Many are asking, “Who can show us any good?” Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O Lord.’ (Ps. 4:6)

In addition to the priest and prophet, Vatican ll implores us to emulate the Spirit of Christ the King. Wow, that’s a stretch. I have known a few who possessed what I would describe as a ‘kingly’ anointing, a humble yet regal confidence in the King who called them to impart glorious impossibilities to the body of Christ.

Like King David, each possessed a mantle that could bear a little more weight than the rest of us. And each knew his/her weakness acutely, so much so that they clung to Jesus. Each ‘king’ I have known lived in child-like dependence upon the King of Kings.

In that each of us can take heart: our desire to reflect more of the glory of King Jesus comes only though intimate communion with Him. We should aspire to more—more of His ruler and reign in our lives—yet always with the understanding that spiritual heights arise from the lowest place of surrender. His Kingship is most obvious in grateful slaves.

‘And we who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.’ (2 Cor. 3:18)

‘Father, forgive us for despising our smallness. We welcome the revelation of our driest, lowest place as the ground for King Jesus. Use all things to draw us back to dependency; out of intimate communion, may we aspire to the heights of what You have destined for us. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we confess our sins of cowardice and compromise. We have violated Your holy commands in regards to what we have done to our bodies and other bodies. And in our compromise we have become cowards, unwilling to stand for what we know to be true for the dignity of all. We ask that You might have mercy on Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington; uphold marriage in these states, and in our nation, as the Supreme Court prepares to rule on ‘gay marriage.’
