Con and Conscience

‘As aliens, live in reverent fear.’ (1 Pet 1:17)

I initiated ‘Aliens in America’ after the Trump/Biden debate in June. How could Donald still try to dodge the truth that he undermined the law by refusing to accept election defeat in ’20?

Unreality. Subterfuge. Lying then manipulating and mobilizing dispossessed ‘patriots.’

That’s evil. Period.

Don’t get me wrong. I flinch at Kamala’s main plank of ‘reproductive freedom’ and Walz establishing Minnesota as a ‘trans’ state of refuge. A Harris vote ensures indignities upon the most vulnerable. Claro.

Trump is less clear. He just lies. If he doesn’t like reality, he alters it. So do his followers. He insists. Those who claim Trump lost the election are no longer his friends.

You want Trump? Be prepared to enter into a world of his own design. Suspend objective reality ‘cause he may well change it.

I am grateful that Trump did leave the White House on January 20th, ’21. He did so after fomenting an attack on the US Capitol, unprecedented in our history of presidential transitions. I do not attribute Trump’s surrendering the presidency to his good will but to God’s grace and the quality of our democracy.

I do not follow media inflation of Trump’s unlikability. Vilifying him is pointless and amplifies his strategy of saying rabid things to attract fringe voters. Trump is not the source of all our evils. We’ve many quieter ones, draped in dignity. Just scan your news feed: Kamala, wordless yet regal, with Trump framed on the verge of an aneurysm, spewing hate.

Vance too. For all JD’s articulate, gracious ways, the media frames him as a bumbling, woman-hating clod: nothing elegiac about that hillbilly.

In truth, Vance is the best thing about Trump, as his interviews and debate against Walz reveal.

The debate also revealed his blind spot, as he dodged the ’20 election question artlessly (censorship? really?) and still cast doubt on the results of that election.

I’m incredulous. Vance claims he can disagree with Trump and invokes ‘common sense’ policies about the economy and building families.

Show us the ‘common sense’ that guards our democracy and the peaceful transition of power America faces in the next few months. JD, tell us the truth: Trump lost fair and square in ’20. He lied and endangered our democracy, which happens to be more resilient than Trump is corrupt.

‘Do not quiet our consciences, O God, when we have been conned. In accord with the truth you’ve placed in our hearts, keep us alive to reality, allergic to unreality, especially in the slippery world of politics. Free us, as aliens, from being fools for anyone other than You.’

‘Jesus, You are the King and we are first citizens of Your Kingdom. Would you free us for You in this election season, not to hide but to shine? You’ve always asked nothing less from Your elect whom You have made ‘strangers in a strange land’ (Ex. 2:22). Here we are, a people who don’t know what to do but who look and listen to our King.

“Father of all holiness,
guide our hearts to You.
Keep in the light of Your Truth
all those You have freed from the darkness of unbelief.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son.”’
Amen
