Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the internship?
Usually the internship starts in January or June and runs for 3, 6 or 12 months.
Where would I live?
The Desert Stream internship program does not provide housing. We will be glad to assist you in finding housing. There are many affordable housing opportunities in the Kansas City area. The cost varies: from $300-400/month to live with a family, to $1,250/month to rent a three bedroom house(not including utilities).
Do I need a car?
We do not provide transportation and public transportation in Kansas City is limited. Therefore access to a car during the internship is optimal. If that is not possible(especially for non-US interns), we will try to work with you in arranging transportation.
Does Desert Stream provide any financial assistance?
Desert Stream does not provide any financial assistance to interns.
We urge all interns to raise support for their internship. Many seek funding through their home churches, local community, family and friends. As much as possible, the Intern Directors will work with interns in their fundraising efforts.
How much money will I need?
Living expenses vary from person to person: from a minimum of $1,000/monthly for a single person to $2,500/monthly for a family.
What about my social needs?
We will make every effort to welcome you and help as you adjust to a new environment. Please know that DS staff should not be your only source of social interaction and community. While our staff is close, the majority of our fellowship takes place during the work week.
Do I need a computer?
We have computers in our office for office work. We would prefer that the office computers not be used for personal business. It is recommended that each intern have access to a computer outside of the DS office.
Once I apply, can I start raising money?
Once you have been accepted into the program you will be instructed about raising financial support. Please do not begin any support raising until that time.
What do I do when I get to Kansas City?
Your arrival plans will be worked out with the Intern Directors once you are accepted into the program.
What if I have any other questions?
I think I want to apply; what should I do?
Please pray and consider all of this information.
Also, please take into account the following questions:
What is your future vision for using what you learn during the internship?
Do you have a local church to return to after the internship; one that wants you to establish Desert Stream programs there? If programs exist in your area, are you working with the local leaders?
Please note:
Whenever possible a face to face interview with the intern applicant is required.
